Success Stories

Mary Prise
Instructor, Kee Business College, a subsidiary of Corinthian Schools, Inc.
Master Instructor

Senior Chief Petty Officer Mary Prise sailed the globe teaching courses on everything from drug and alcohol policies to antisubmarine air control, but when it came to the basic functions of her personal computer, she was like a ship stranded at sea. Despite her initial lack of knowledge and experience, Prise was able to make a successful career transition into the computer training industry thanks to hard work, great people skills, and Microsoft® Office Specialist certification.

After 22 years of service in the U.S. Navy, Prise retired and began looking for a new career in the private sector. She enjoyed being an instructor in the Navy and hoped to continue teaching in another field. Although she had no experience with computers, Prise chose the computer industry for its constant excitement and change that she had become accustomed to in Navy life.

To gain experience, Prise began working for a small computer company and quickly learned the basics of computer software and hardware. While attending a job fair, Prise was offered a part-time instructor position at a computer training center. She brought her computer skills up to par with her instructional skills by attending computer lectures at the center and studying courseware on her own. Within a short time she was ready to instruct courses in Microsoft Office.

Prise enjoyed the fruits of her planning and hard work and within a year was promoted to being a full-time instructor. Still driven to improve her computer skills, Prise pursued and completed several Microsoft Office certification exams at CompUSA and Electronic Systems.

Although she was not actively seeking a job change, opportunities began pouring in once Prise earned Master level certification for Office 97. She eventually accepted a very lucrative full-time training position with Kee Business College to help launch its new Microsoft Office course.

Chris Deatherage, the Lead Microsoft Office Instructor at Kee Business College and Prise's recruiter, understands the value of certification to help people succeed in their careers. "Companies today want to hire people whose skills are certified," he says. "Students who take advantage of Microsoft Office training and certification will experience more success in the business world."

Because of the success of the Microsoft Office course, Kee Business College will expand the program for the upcoming year. It is no wonder students are interested in Microsoft Office certification when their instructor, Mary Prise, is a prime example of certification success.
