Boston University Selects the Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³)
program as its Computer Basics Course for One Credit Hour at the Metropolitan College
BOSTON, MA (July 24, 2003) Boston University, the fourth largest private education
institution in the United States with students from 140 foreign countries and over 3,000 professors
and instructors on staff, announced today that it has created a new course in Computer Fundamentals
for its Metropolitan College using the Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³) authorized
curriculum and certification examinations. The course is offered to students for one hour of college
credit in the non-degree category.
“IC³ is part of the baseline Internet skills and competencies that have to be in place if the next
generation of blended distance learning educational programs - credit and non-credit alike - are to be
effective and relevant to the needs of the emerging workforce of the 21st Century” says Stephen H. Lynch,
Business Development Manager of the Training Track at Boston University’s Corporate Education Center, a
unit of the Division of Extended Education. Boston University established the Corporate Education Center
in 1986 as part of their commitment to the success of workforce development. The Center’s course, titled
“Fundamentals of Computers, Windows Applications, and Internet”, will be offered each semester as a track
of 14, 3-hour sessions. According to Mr. Lynch, “when students complete the course, they will have a
thorough understanding of computer technology and terminology, software and hardware components of every
day use and be able to make use of computer applications for day to day activities.”
Boston University has also established Education Affiliate® partners throughout the country as a distribution
network for its program. The IC³ certification is offered through Boston University’s Education Affiliate
partners as a precursor to higher-end training and certification tracks in its career programs, IT programs,
and project management course offerings. “By becoming a Certiport partner, we have enabled the IC³ program
content to become part of the Boston University network and have brought it to life in as many venues as
possible including, high school student and teacher training, career programs, IT programs, management
development, program/process and project management, as well as Master's programs designed specifically for
military audiences and our Evergreen program for Seniors to stay part of the Internet revolution as their
younger learner counterparts” says Mr. Lynch.
Boston University is qualified, positioned, and capable, but more importantly is actively engaged in all
facets of learners lives along the way. “Boston University is in the business of lifelong learning from high
school to senior education” says Mr. Lynch. “Our motto of ‘students for life’ means having relevant, compelling
offerings at every stage of that life. As one of the world’s great academic centers, we are uniquely positioned
to deliver solid programs such as IC³ in our curriculum, which continue our trend towards providing programs
addressing the needs of both the corporate and educational learner.”
