The Software Human Resource Council joins the Global Digital Literacy Council as
part of its ongoing effort to promote digital literacy
OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA – April 21, 2004 The Software
Human Resource Council (SHRC) has joined the Global Digital Literacy Council
(GDLC). Formed in 1992, SHRC collaborates with industry, government and educational
organizations on innovative programs to develop a highly-skilled Canadian ICT
workforce. This partnership with GDLC will accelerate SHRC’s ongoing
efforts to promote digital literacy throughout Canada and the world. SHRC joins
government, industry and educational leaders on the Council including Oxford
Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR) and eSkills in the UK, the National InfoComm
Competency Centre of Singapore (NICC), CompTIA and the National Workforce Centre
for Emerging Technologies (NWCET) in the US and OCI in Japan.
“The Council welcomes SHRC and the unique perspective President Paul
Swinwood brings representing not only SHRC and its members, but Canadian interests
as well in the identification and advancement of global digital literacy issues,” states
Rob Moore, Secretariat to the GDLC. “Paul joins distinguished Council
members representing key industries and geographies from throughout the world.”
SHRC embraces the need for all Canadians to be digitally literate and promotes
the establishment of literacy standards as a significant component of economic
growth and competitiveness. SHRC members include the Association of Canadian
Community Colleges (ACCC), Cisco Systems Networking Academy and the Bank of
Canada, among others. By joining the GDLC, SHRC will participate in the development
of global Internet and computing standards. The GDLC, along with hundreds of
subject matter experts worldwide, conducts comprehensive research, and expert
evaluation and analysis in order to identify core digital literacy standards.
Recently, the GDLC ratified the Certiport Internet and Computing Core Certification
(IC³) standards as the only existing measurement that meets the Council’s
expectation for currency and relevancy in digital skills for a global audience.
“At SHRC we have long recognized that the definition and standardization
of skills are key cornerstones for the development of a productive labour force
and effective employment policies,” stated Paul D. Swinwood, President,
SHRC. “ SHRC is very pleased to join the Global Digital Literacy Council
at a time when global adoption of information technology has created a need
for a new type of literacy, one that enables workers to participate fully in
the worldwide knowledge economy. ”
The GDLC is a leadership and advocacy organization. Council members convene
and collaborate online at a community site to review and ratify digital literacy
standards, define best practices and develop programs and position papers on
global digital literacy. Membership in the GDLC is by invitation only. The
Council’s community site is hosted by the ICT Literacy Forum (www.ictliteracy.info),
and the Council is sponsored by Certiport, an advocate of global digital literacy
and provider of the Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³) program.
Certiport recently demonstrated its active support of Canadian ICT skills
development and competency by becoming a Platinum Sponsor of SHRC. Certiport
recognizes SHRC’s contribution to the advancement of global digital literacy
and has joined forces with other SHRC members such as the Canadian Information
Processing Society to support SHRC’s charter.
