Utah Offers High School Course Credit for IC³ Digital Literacy

Certiport
Certification Validates Required Skills Taught in Computer Technology Course
SALT LAKE CITY – March 9, 2004 Certiport today announced that the Utah
State Office of Education has approved Certiport's globally recognized Internet
and Computing Core Certification (IC³) for .5 hours course credit for
high school students across the state for the state-mandated Computer Technology
course. This option, implemented at the discretion of local districts, affects
high school students beginning with tens of thousands of current eighth graders
who are now required to complete the computer literacy course or "test-out” of
the class in order to graduate. This announcement follows previous state success
with the adoption of IC³ by the state as a test-out option without course
credit.
"
IC³ provides a valuable measurement of computer skills needed for high
school graduation,” stated Mary M. Shumway, Applied Technology Education
Director for the Utah State Office of Education “In addition, it gives
students a recognized industry certification that they can take with them after
they graduate."
“Utah is once again demonstrating leadership among states working to bridge
the digital divide by adopting computer skills standards that are current and
relevant,” said David Saedi, CEO for Certiport. “Now the IC³ global
standard not only validates fundamental skills needed by Utah’s students
in today's digital workplace, but it can also provide credit towards graduation
in the process."
Utah’s Computer
Technology class was created to provide an introduction
to computer application software that includes document processing, spreadsheets
and other application skills. An understanding of ethics and the use of operating
systems, information resources and electronic mail are also included.
An industry standard for measuring basic computer literacy for academia and
the workplace, IC³ exam objectives were built strategically by professional
researchers, test developers, psychometricians and more than 270 subject matter
experts (SMEs) in 19 countries—all of whom contributed content and feedback
and validated certification requirements. A student with IC³ certification
not only has an understanding of computing fundamentals, key applications and
online functionality, but also possesses the necessary foundation to excel
into advanced technical and desktop application certifications.
